SSC opens school year with tragedy

STANDISH — For students, the first day of school is usually emotional, filled with excitement and nervousness. For students at Standish-Sterling Central High School that day was also filled with sadness.

Shawn Brindley, 18, of Alger was killed in a two-car accident Monday in Bay County. Brindley was a senior at SSC.

“This morning (Tuesday) we called a staff and teacher meeting to inform everyone what was going on,” Principal Roger Fritz said. “It was all news to them.”

Fritz said that two counselors were on staff to talk and comfort students.

“They are there to address the students' needs and concerns,” he said. “We informed his friends who may not have known. Most students were aware of the accident.”

He added that Brindley’s brother, Andrew, a senior, was not in class.

“Everyone needs time to grieve,” Fritz said. “It’s our job to take care of our kids.”
