CHESANING - Dec. 2, 2008 - Standish-Sterling has high hopes for the 2008-9 girls basketball season, but Tuesday's opener at Chesaning probably won't show up in any Panther highlight films.

A powerful Chesaning squad that went 18-3 last season and returns most of its key players scored the first 18 points of the game and rolled to a 68-41 victory over Standish-Sterling.

"They were a great team," said SSC coach Kevin King. "It's one of those nights when you walk out of the gym wondering if we were as bad as we looked, or if they were just that good.

"If you take Nouvel (last year) out of the mix, that's probably the best team we've seen in my years here."

SSC made some headway into the Chesaning lead, cutting it to eight early in the third quarter.

But that was when the Indians put on another big run to pull away.

Abbye Gulvas led SSC with 11 points, Kelsye Mielke had 10 and Ashlyn Gulvas added eight.

Megan Newton led Chesaning with 18 points.

"We had some first-game jitters, turned the ball over a lot and got into some foul trouble," King said. "It wasn't like they ran the score up and then subbed in a bunch of people; they only dressed eight.

"They were just a really good team, and (Tuesday), we weren't."
