STANDISH — Standish-Sterling won its first NEMC boys’ track and field dual over Whittemore-Prescott on Wednesday, but it wasn't easy.

The Panthers held on for a 75.5-61.5 victory over the Cards, but W-P showed in the process that it's capable of doing some damage, particularly in the dual meet format.

SSC's event winners included Ryan Pickvet, Daren Johnson, Nick Brandenburg and Matt Schmidt in the 4x800 relay (9:46.56); Cole Walderzak in the discus (152-6) and shot put (48-6); Mitchell McFarland in the long jump (20-0); Pickvet in the 1600 (5:01.29) and 3200 (11:05.82); Casey Potts, Mitchell McFarland, Kevin Reeves and Trent Fouchey in the 4x100 relay (46.23); Kris Hazeltine in the 400 (56.23); Potts in the 300 hurdles (43.99); Shay Irving in the 800 (2:16.51); and Irving, Blake Grivetti, David Lundgren, Derek Williams in the 4x400 (3:55.12).

“To hang around with Standish-Sterling ... hopefully says something about how far this program has come," said W-P coach Jeff Erickson. ”Our kids believe they can run with the big dogs in the NEMC. I believe this team has a lot of upside considering how young we are."

W-P's winners were Billy Raushi in the high jump (6-4) and 110 hurdles (15.47), Casey Popielarz in the pole vault (9-6); Cody Foreman in the 100 (10.94) and 200 (23.29); and Matt Ackerman, Foreman, Greg Lomason, and Raushi in the 4x200 relay (1:34.79).
