STANDISH-STERLING — Standish-Sterling's girls were unaccustomed to being four games into the season without a win.
The Panthers remedied that in a big way Wednesday, building a big lead over Oscoda and coasting to a 67-27 victory over the Owls.
Ashlyn Gulvas and Ellen Walderzak each scored six points in the first quarter as the Panthers built a 21-6 lead. SSC extended it to 40-14 at the half and nine Panthers scored before the end of the third quarter.
Walderzak led the Panthers (1-4) with 14 points, with Kayla Hilyard adding 12, Ashlyn Gulvas with eight and Kelsye Mielke, Allison Collier and Paige Raes with seven apiece.
Abby Samotis led the Owls (0-3) with eight points, with Megan Zarachowicz and heather Patterson adding six each.
The boys from SSC also found big success against the Owls and went to 6-8 Cole Walderzak early and often against Oscoda on Wednesday, and the undersized Owls simply had no answer.
Walderzak scored 16 of his career-high 20 points in the first quarter as the Panther built a 20-6 lead and went on to a 68-35 non-conference boys basketball victory.
All but one of the 11 Panthers who played got in the scoring column. Trevor Karbowski had seven in the second quarter and Will Stanley hit a 3-pointer as SSC built a 40-19 lead at the half.
Karbowski finished with 11 points and Kevin Reeves had eight for the Panthers (2-0).
Justin Cain led Oscoda (0-3) with 11 and Chris Dehmel scored nine.
