SSC bus driver retires after 39 years

STERLING — After 39 years of service to the Standish-Sterling School District, Dennis Kolevar has retired from the career he loves.

According to Kolevar, it all began on March 17, 1969, the day before his 21st birthday.

While home on vacation from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, where he had completed three years of a business degree, he was at his Aunt’s house for a regular night of Bridge Club, when conversation turned to his birthday, which was the following day.

“Marge Poole, who was in charge of the bus garage, asked me if I had ever thought about driving bus and I told her I had,” Kolevar said. “She told me to come by the garage the next morning if I was still interested and so I did.

“That’s the day it all began and the next fall I had my own bus route.”

He says he’s always been intrigued with buses and has well over a 100 model and toy buses at his house in Sterling.

“I’ve always just liked them,” Kolevar said.

He says this past fall, due to health issues, he was forced to retire.
