SSC, WP bowlers compete at state finals

STERLING HEIGHTS / JACKSON — A number of area high school bowlers competed last weekend at the MHSAA state finals at various downstate venues.

Individual competition took place on Saturday, March 7, with Division 2 competing at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights and Division 3 at Airport Lanes in Jackson.

In individual competition, all state qualifiers bowl six games, with the top 16 advancing to best-of-three elimination rounds to determine a state champion.

The closest any local athlete came to cracking the top 16 was Tawas Area's Ian MacMurray, who finished 19th with a six-game score of 1183 and a high game of 244.

Ogemaw Heights' Kyle Turner finished 24th with an 1170 (242 high game), John Glenn's Zachary Fyling finished 31st with an 1154 (high game 233) and Pinconning's Benjamin Skidmore was 48th with a high of 232.

On the girls' side, Standish-Sterling's Kierstin Sanch bowled 913 with a high of 203, good for 68th place.

In Division 3 boys, Whittemore-Prescott's David LaPoint finished 56th with a six-game score of 1023 and a high of 214.

Oscoda's Allison Bickel finished 34th with a score of 990 and a high of 226.

In team competition, John Glenn's boys fell in the Division 2 quarterfinals to Armada 1813-1733. The Bobcat girls reached the state finals match, defeating Warren Regina 1686-1480 in the quarterfinals and Coloma 1721-1612.

In the championship match, Tecumseh topped the Bobcats 1738-1728. Individual scoring for Glenn included Janelle Norgan (181), Rachel Lokajtys (224), Amanda Gregg (177), Jenny LaClair (244) and Shantel Spoor / Melissa West / Abby Wozniak (125).
