SSC Equestrian team qualifies for state finals



STANDISH – The Standish-Sterling Central Equestrian team has qualified for the state finals at the Midland Fairgrounds Oct. 14-17.

The Standish-Sterling Central Equestrian team is comprised of three riders, senior Jessica Fenner, junior Madison Kusey and freshman Jessica Dodd.

The team won the class C division title Ogemaw County Fairgrounds and followed that up with a victory at regionals on Oct. 3, at the Midland Fairgrounds. She added that each equestrian meet has 17 different classes. Fenner competes in saddle seat, western, and speed; Kusey competes in saddle seat, western, and speed; Dodd competes in saddle seat, hunt seat, western, and speed.

Head coach Kelley Karnes said the team has performed well.

“I am proud of what this team has accomplished,” she said. “They have surprised me, but I expected them to be here.”

Karnes said the girls have had good control of their horses.

“We have had consistant riding patterns and

Karnes has been the coach for the equestrian team for six years and said being a part of the equestrian team is a good expierence for the girls.

“I think (equestrian) is an educational expierence,” she said. “I enjoy watching the (team) learning and progressing.”
