SSC 3, Oscoda 0
STANDISH-STERLING - Oct. 7, 2008 - Standish-Sterling's volleyball team put together the kind of match Monday that coach Kristi Yenna hopes will be an indication of the Panthers' play down the stretch.
Oscoda was hoping to put SSC's 25-18, 25-12, 25-18 defeat of the Owls behind them.
The Panthers built big leads in each of the three games, giving them enough of a cushion to weather Oscoda's attempts to come back in the first and third sets.
"Tonight I hope was a good indicator of how we'll be playing now," Yenna said. "We had a couple of lulls, but it's better than we've been playing overall.
"Fortunately when we hit those lulls we were ahead enough that we could handle it. We've had a couple of tough practices that I hope made a difference."
Cassie Roehm had a big opening game on the front line as the Panthers built an 18-8 lead. The Owls played their best stretch of the night in cutting the SSC lead to 20-17 behind Heather Patterson's three kills in that stretch, but Roehm had tow kills in the final five SSC points to finish off the win.
The Panthers pulled away from a 5-5 tie in the second game to outscore the Owls 20-7 the rest of the way, and in the third game Ellen Walderzak served up eight straight points, including three aces, to break open a 15-14 game.
"We did not have a good game," said Oscoda coach Laura Franklin. "We kept on making fundamental mistakes."
The Panthers return to NEMC play on Wednesday at Whittemore-Prescott, while Oscoda hosts AuGres-Sims on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
Oscoda Stats: Heather Patterson 9 kills; Lelia Cotton 4 kills, 14 blocks; Sarah Inman 4 kills, 4 aces, 4 blocks; Tiffany Rios 12 assists, 5 blocks;
