STANDISH — Whether you want to get in shape, improve your knowledge of computers, become a budding young golfer, make yourself a better photographer or show your stuff on the volleyball court, the Standish-Sterling (S-S) Community Education program has something to offer for you, whether you’re a student or adult.

Ben Welmers, S-S Athletic Director and Community Education Director, says this winter, Community Ed will offer water and step aerobics classes, basic home computing and Internet courses, a digital photography class, an adult co-ed volleyball league and a youth golf clinic.

Welmers says the courses are so numerous and diverse due to the simplicity of making a program available.

“I’ll work with anybody on anything, if we’ve got, for example, a retired wood shop teacher who wants to teach a woods class,” Welmers said. “It’s really just somebody contacting me and saying ‘hey, I want to use a classroom.’”

But even though the program, which has also offered sports clinics and a Tae Kwon Doe class, offers diverse programs to the community, Welmers says he envisions an even greater offering to the community.

“My long-term goal is to grow (the program),” he said. “We probably offer more youth activities to date. … I’m trying to focus more on the adult stuff now.”

While the costs of most of the courses, charges this winter range from $10 for a session of digital photography classes to $110 for a team to compete in the adult volleyball league, go towards paying an instructor, Welmers says the program can be beneficial to the district.

“It can be a revenue source,” he said.
