Retiring register of deeds honored

STANDISH — After 28 years of service to Arenac County, Rose Smith is looking forward to relaxing in her retirement.

Rose Smith, who most recently worked as the register of deeds for the county, was honored for her service with a plaque from the Arenac County Board of Commissioners Nov. 20.

“I never thought when I walked through the front door I’d be here this long,” Smith said at the ceremony. “I made a lot of friends, and now there’s only five people left from the original crew when I walked in here.”

Smith originally started working at the county in the county clerk’s office, but was appointed to the register of deeds position around May of 1995. She was elected to the position the following year, and served in the position until she decided not to run for reelection for health reasons this year.

“I felt it was time to leave, and let someone else take over,” Smith said.

Smith did accomplish her number one goal in office — making the deeds and house information available to residents online — something she had set out to do in her first campaign, back in 1996.

She said the online database started some years ago, but was not perfected by her vision until about a year ago.

Now, she said she plans on relaxing and possibly writing a book.

“I just really loved my taxpayers and amd glad I could do something useful for them,” Smith said. “I want to thank them for voting me in.”
