STANDISH — Relay For Life 2011 is ready for a new season.
The 2011 Relay For Life kickoff will take place inside the Standish-Sterling Central High School commons on Tuesday, April 19, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Chairperson Penny Page said the kickoff is the “official” start of the season for Relay For Life.
“We just want to have fun with it,” she said.
Page said that, like other Relay events, the kickoff will be a celebration.
“That’s why we do this,” she said. “We want to gather and celebrate, remember those we have lost and fight back with those who currently are battling cancer.”
Page said the kickoff event will operate like a smaller version of Relay For Life.
“It’s going to be like a mini Relay,” she said.
The theme for the kickoff event is sports. Page said there will be some competitions between teams.
“Each team will choose a sport, and we may end up having some friendly competition,” she said.
Paige said that awards from the 2010 Relay will be handed out during the event.
She said that the kickoff event is used to help get more people and teams involved in Relay For Life.
“We encourage everyone to come,” she said. “We really hope that we have more survivors join us this year. We are always looking to increase the numbers of survivors.”
Arenac County is also scheduled to receive an award from the American Cancer Society. Paige said the county was selected for the All-American Award.
