ROAD REPORT: Hickory Island Road Bridge closed permanently

ARENAC TOWNSHIP — The bridge practically right at the midpoint of Hickory Island Road was closed off Thursday, Feb. 19 by the Arenac County Road Commission due to its age and condition and it will not be opened up again for vehicle traffic.

“It’s a very old bridge, it’s almost like one lane. It was built in the (19)20’s,” said Arenac County Road Commission Superintendent/Manager Blair Dyer. “It’s safe to walk across but there’s no sense putting cars across it today.”

Dyer says the bridge will remain intact, as it is now being classified as a historical structure.

Hickory Island Road runs north and south and connects Hale Road and State Road. Anyone who travels the road often to go back and forth between Hale and State roads can find an alternate route by calling the road commission at 989-653-2411.
