Prison employees receive transfer/layoff notices
STANDISH — On Thursday, Corrections Officers and other staff members at Standish Max (SMF) received word from the state about their future.
“Today is the day that transfer/layoff notices are being issued, however staff have 7-14 days (depending on bargaining group) to make a decision,” said an E-mail from Michigan Department of Corrections Public Information Officer Russ Marlan. “So, we won't know positive number for a couple weeks.”
“They do everybody’s bumps (transfers)… but some people don’t take their bump,” said SMF Administrative Assistant Rebecca Bailey, adding longer travel times for employees who already travel to Standish may force some to turn down a job at a new location. “Then that changes the whole scenario. That person would then be laid off.”
According to Bailey, SMF employees have until Oct. 22 to accept or decline the transfers.
About 80-90 employees of the MDOC are expected to receive a layoff due to the closure of the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility. Not all those employees, though, would be employees of the Standish prison.
