Precautions can prevent fires

As you prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with family and friends, it’s important to remember to celebrate the holiday responsibly.

June is Fireworks Safety Month, and with that in mind, be sure to take the extra time to think about what you’re doing when you’re playing with fireworks, or having campfires.

This summer has seen a large number of wildfires in and around our area. The Little Mack fire in Oscoda County burned approximately 800 acres this past April. Two separate fires in Ogemaw County burned more than 400 acres near Clear Lake in May.

Even worse was the Duck Lake fire in the Upper Peninsula, which burned more than 21,000 acres of land.

With that in mind, it is important to be responsible when you’re having fun, not only during the holiday, but for the remainder of the summer as well.

Monitor your children when they are playing with sparklers. Make sure your campfire is completely out before heading to bed. Be sure to take the time to make sure all precautions are taken.

All too often, these large wildfires can begin with just one spark on dry land. Even the most responsible of people can forget to completely put out a campfire or properly dispose of fireworks.

It’s important to take these precautions because just one improper decision could ruin not only the summer, but people’s lives as well.

So take the time to cover all your bases when playing with fireworks or using fire in any way this summer.

Those few extra seconds you take to put out your campfire could save hundreds of acres from being burned and save hundreds of lives and homes in the process.
