Potential access sites to be surveyed this week

Deep River also considering noise ordinance

DEEP RIVER TOWNSHIP — The Deep River Township Board is moving ahead in the process of establishing public access sites along the Rifle River, as survey work is expected to be completed this week.

Township Supervisor Robert Budz said Survey Solutions, Inc. (SSI), of Standish would perform the surveying of the sites.

Guy Spreeman, co-owner of SSI, said the final cost has not been determined for the survey, as SSI, when contracting with local units of government or businesses, usually charges the client afterwards.

“What I told (Budz) is we would just charge him whatever we had into it,” Spreeman said. He added SSI would also alert Deep River Township if additional costs appeared that would substantially affect the price of surveying.

Budz said one person, specifically, has complained about the idea of public access sites being placed along the Rifle River in the township.

“A person that owns land on the river, but isn’t a resident of the township, thought it was going to devalue his property,” Budz said.

Deep River Township owns two parcels along the Rifle River and is attempting to create public access sites for fishing, canoeing and other recreational activities on the river.

In other Deep River Township news, Budz said the township’s planning commission, per board direction, would discuss a possible noise ordinance.

He said a noise ordinance was proposed last year, as well, but the planning commission didn’t find it feasible at the time.

“They couldn’t see how you can track it in the country,” Budz said.

However, with a recent complaint, which Budz said came from a resident of Clayton Township, who lives near the Rifle River and Deep River Township. According to Budz, he called the sheriff’s department, but to no avail.

“Deep River Township doesn’t have a noise ordinance, so there was basically nothing they (sheriff’s department) could do,” Budz said.
