Pinny can’t stop Division 4 powerhouse
GOODRICH — Pinconning's football team gave unbeaten, third-ranked (in Division 4) Goodrich all it could handle Friday.
As they have with every premier opponent they've played, the Spartans showed they belonged on the field with the Martians, leading 21-14 at the half before losing 38-21.
The Spartans struck in the first quarter with a 21-yard Tyler Espitia run, led 14-7 after Steven Moore's 47-yard interception return for a touchdown and 21-14 after Moore hit Lucas Foco with a 48-yard touchdown pass.
Goodrich took the lead for good on Reece Kurdyl's 26-yard field goal with 42 seconds left in the third quarter. Tyler Ellsworth's 4-yard run and Jake Bourassa's 71-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter put the wraps on the game.
NIck Schultz led the Spartans with 70 rushing yards on nine carries and Moore completed 3-of-11 passes for 56 yard.
The Spartans' six losses have come to teams with a combined record of 39-9. With just one team on their schedule with a losing record and four teams that were ranked in the AP top 10 of their respective divisions, Pinny has played one of the toughest schedules in the state. Six opponents have already wrapped up playoff berths, while two (Tawas and Ogemaw) can get in this weekend with victories in their final games.
The one team on their schedule that won't finish above .500 is Bullock Creek (1-7), who the Spartans play Oct. 24 in their season finale. The Lancer pushed Freeland (ranked No. 10 in Division 5) hard in a 36-33 loss and won't be a pushover as Pinny tries to finish on a high note.
