ARENAC COUNTY — In 2008, senior citizens of Arenac County — considered age 60 and above — were able to enjoy the parks, when weather permitted, in Arenac County (Oasis and AuGres) free of charge on Wednesdays.

This year, according to District V County Commissioner Joseph Sancimino, seniors will have free use of the parks Monday through Thursday every week.

“We feel seniors have supported the county with taxes their whole life,” Sancimino said. “It’s about time we return the favor and lend a helping hand…show thanks for support over the years.”

He added a senior apartment complex in Standish made scheduled runs last year for $1 to the parks on Wednesdays but because of several circumstances, the idea didn’t draw the attention from seniors as it had hoped.

“[We figure] with more days, they’ll have a better chance to get out there,” Sancimino said, adding board members were immediately onboard with the idea.

Sancimino also says Oasis park is looking to boost youth attendance through bands and volleyball leagues/tournaments.

“We’re (parks board) pretty excited,” the commissioner said. “We’re working with Ben Welmers (Standish-Sterling athletic director) and Jerry Tremble to get the details of the volleyball leagues and tournament. We (parks board) think it’ll help draw attention to the youth in Arenac County.

“We’re also hoping to get a band in every other week.”
