PINCONNING — This year’s Pinconning varsity girls’ basketball team is hoping to improve on its five-win total from last year.

Coach Joe Herek, in his second year guiding the Spartans, said last year’s win total was the most for a Pinconning varsity girls’ basketball team since 2003. Two seniors will lead this year’s Spartans cagers — four-year starter Jessica Vidalez and Shannon McDougall. Junior Chelsea Adcock is the other returning starter from last year’s team, Herek said.

In addition, Herek said three sophomores would receive a lot of playing time: Dana Mayer, Lauren Look, and Cassidy Vieau. Look and sister Lindsey, a junior, transferred to Pinconning this year from Tawas, Herek said.

As far as last year’s team is concerned, Herek said, “I think they learned a lot last year. Hopefully, the girls that are coming back will have a much better approach to the game.”

He said season-long improvement would be the main focus of this year’s Spartans, due to the fact they have such a young team.

“As long as we show progress and our attitude is good, we should do well. The wins and losses will take care of themselves,” Herek said.

The Lady Spartans get their season rolling on Dec. 1 when they take on Bay City John Glenn at the Bay County Tournament at John Glenn High School.
