STANDISH TWP. — An accident on Arenac State Road south of Meyette Road on Feb. 13 has left the driver dead.

Harold John Padget, 72, of Bay City was going southbound on Arenac State when he lost control of the vehicle, according to Undersheriff Don McIntyre. He said Padget had gotten onto the shoulder of the road and overcorrected, causing him to move sideways across the road where he struck a tree.

The Arenac County Sheriff’s Department received a call about the accident at roughly 1:15 p.m., and Padget was declared dead when emergency personnel from the sheriff’s department, Mobile Medical Response, and the Standish Area Fire Authority arrived on scene, Mcintyre said. There were no passengers in the vehicle, and McIntyre said Padget was wearing his seatbelt.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation, McIntyre said, adding that speed is believed to be a factor.
