OMER – Omer City Councilwoman Ruth Ann Cook is the city’s new mayor pro tem.

Cook volunteered for the position, and was approved in a unanimous vote by the other five members of the city council present at its meeting Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Councilwoman Revia Stewart was absent.

Omer Mayor Alice Sproule said the previous mayor pro tem, Samantha Mitchell, resigned from the council due to a full plate of personal tasks. She said the mayor pro tem is required to run city council meetings when she is not available.

“It’s been a couple of months since we had one,” she said. “We discussed it last time, but nobody had anyone they wanted to suggest, so I tabled it so we could think about it.”

The city council also discussed ideas for improving the Omer Little Eagle’s Nest Library in 2012 if funds became available.

The Little Eagle’s Nest Library opened in February 2011 after two years of construction. It was built using three grants from the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe totaling $118,086.

The library is a part of the Iosco-Arenac District Library Network, and Sproule said it received $10,000 in 2011 from the network due to surplus funds from taxes and fines.

She asked the council to start thinking of ideas in case the library receives additional money from the network or through grants in 2012. Sproule suggested general improvements to the library’s reading room or adding computers for children to use.

Councilman Robin Berry suggested the library’s event board be reserved solely for library announcements and business, and not for residents and city government to make announcements or advertisements.

Sproule told the Independent in January the Little Eagle’s Nest is the only library in the Arenac Eastern School District. Smaller donations allowed the city to get a new sign for the building and begin work on a mural inside the library detailing the history of Omer.
