Northeast Art Center to have weeklong arts day camp

STANDISH – A fine arts day camp covering subjects ranging from painting and drawing to culturing and acting is scheduled for the end of the month at the Northeast Arts Center in Standish.

Running from July 30 through August 3 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., the camp is open to students 8-13 years old. According to Northeast Arts Council Executive Director Gail Schmidt, the arts camp has been well received in past years.

“The kids really love it,” Schmidt said. “We charge $30 for the week.”

She said with similar events at the Midland Center for the Arts and Saginaw Valley State University costing more than $100, this is a good deal.

According to a press release by the Northeast Michigan Arts Council, Andrea Nagy will teach the drawing and painting class, where kids will learn new and traditional methods of drawing and painting. Artist Bridget Moore will teach the mixed media class, which covers working with clay and sculptures, painting, and other three-dimensional objects.

Finally, performing arts will be taught by Michelle Hughey-Lucchesi, an instructor with Alma College. The class includes topics such as stage movement, expression through dance and music, and acting skills. Students will ultimately perform the musical comedy “The Three Aunts.”

Schmidt said the Northeast Arts Center loses money on the camp, but makes up for it with fundraisers the rest of the year. The $30 also covers class supplies and refreshments during the program.

A reduced fee is also available for students who qualify. For more information or to register for the arts camp, call 989-846-9331. Registration must be complete by Monday, July 23.
