AuGRES — For Dr. Antonio Mendiola Jr., just being considered for the St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish Hospital’s Living Legend award was an honor.
“Just to be mentioned is an honor,” he said.
On Saturday, Feb. 26, at Huron Breeze Golf & Country Club in AuGres, Mendiola was awarded as the 2011 Living Legend.
“It is a great honor, and something I am proud of,” he said. “To be humble, I have just been doing my job. I do what I should do.”
Mendiola has more than 40 years of experience in family practice, and has been serving Arenac County since 1984 when he started at St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish Hospital.
“I used to live in AuGres, now I reside in Standish,” he said.
Mendiola said that he has seen Arenac County and St. Mary’s grow over the years.
“I have seen this community improve slowly over the years,” he said. “As a hospital we have made a number of improvements, and now we are one of the best rural hospitals in the country.”
Mendiola said it’s the job of the hospital, and himself to help improve the health of the community.
“We need to continue to help the community get better and have better health,” he said.
Saturday marked the fourth time that the hospital has given out the Living Legend award. Mendiola said he is going to continue to do the best job he can for his patients.”
“I try my best to help with the health of this community,” he said. It’s my job to keep them well.”
Since he began at St. Mary’s in 1984, Mendiola said he has built a number of relationships with his patients. Those relationships have shown during Mendiola’s recent cardiac bypass.
“As I have been recovering, my patients have been sending me get-well cards,” he said. “That is very encouraging to see.”
