Memorial Day flowers stolen from Turner Twp. Hall

TURNER TWP. — Members of the Turner Township Board are “disgusted” after flowers placed in front of the Veteran’s Memorial Rock at the township hall were stolen over Memorial Day weekend.

Hebert Keeley, township supervisor, said a $30 arrangement of red rhododendron flowers was taken from the rock between Thursday, May 26 and Friday, May 27.

“How low do some people have to go?” he said.

Keeley, a veteran of the Korean War, said the board has placed the flowers at the rock for the past three years.

“If the person who took these flowers is a local, I guess we can’t put them out anymore,” he said.

Township Clerk Patricia Brooks said taking the flowers was a sign of disrespect.

“It’s disgusting,” she said. “It’s like robbing a grave.”

Keeley said tire tracks were found around two feet from the rock, which features a plaque dedicated to veterans.

“The person who took these flowers had their face inches away from that plaque,” he said. “They knew what it was for.”

Brooks said she can’t understand why someone would take the arrangement.

“What is this world coming to?” she said. “We just don’t have a lot of respect left around here anymore.”

Brooks said the township will continue to place flowers at the rock every year as a tribute to area veterans. She added that the township did not bother to call the Arenac County Sheriff’s Department.

“I would like to see the flowers put back where they belong,” she said.

A great many of the families that have plots in that cemetery are no longer able to place flowers by the memorials of their loved ones because they are constantly stolen. Why does the township only now react? They have been informed. Yes, it is a travesty that flowers would be stolen from the Veteran's Memorial but it is no less devastating for the families that have had this done repeatedly over many years. When will the township and the county get serious about the vandalism and the theft going on in this cemetery and in the other cemeteries.

Thats what happens when you take the dicipline away from the parents...some kids have no respect for the property of others.

I'm assuming it's kids because I would hate to think that an adult could act so badly!!
