Local grocery store robbed

Burglar caught five minutes after robbery

STANDISH — A robbery occurred at Pine River Grocery, on Pine River Road, in Standish, at approximately 1:33 p.m., Friday, Sept. 24.

According to Arenac County Sheriff’s Department Undersheriff Donald McIntyre, the suspect, who is reported to have stolen $700 in cash and $2,000 in checks and credit card receipts, was captured approximately five minutes after the robbery occurred.

McIntyre said that because the clerk at the store gave a good description, and the information was relayed quickly to Central Dispatch, he spotted the red Dodge truck the suspect was driving as the suspect turned south from Cedar Street onto Main Street.

McIntyre said the suspect did not use a gun in the robbery, but threatened the clerk.

“He told the clerk ‘You better give me all the money, or I will get a gun,’” McIntyre said. He added that even though the suspect did not use a gun he can still be charged for armed robbery because he mentioned a gun.

McIntyre said when he pulled the suspect over, as he turned onto US-23, some of the stolen money was blowing out of the vehicle across the highway.

“It was quite a sight,” he said.
