Letters to the editor - Jan. 14, 2009

Editor, Anyone using propane needs to be aware of some basic facts. First, propane is not produced for its own use. It is a BY-PRODUCT from oil refining and natural gas processing. The propane is removed because of its combustibility. It therefore should be an inexpensive source of fuel. The price per barrel of oil should NOT drive up the price. It is happening because it is competing with crude oil products, according to the EIA (Energy Information Administration). Secondly, the price is not being regulated by the government, which has allowed oil companies to take advantage of rural residents who rely on propane for heat and other energy needs. The Attorney Generals Office is unable to help consumers until there are price regulations imposed. Please contact your legislators to propose legislation, which will protect consumers. U.S. Congressman, Bart Stupak can be reached at 1-800-950-7371 and 97th District Representative, Tim Moore, at 1-866-666-7397. We must make our voices heard and bring a stop to this merciless price gauging. Susan Johnson Standish

Editor, I want to publicly express my deepest appreciation to the folks at St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish Community Hospital for all of their care and support during my husband Albert’s illness and passing. The ER Staff, the MMR people, all the men and women who cared for him in the regular hospital section, and the ladies in the cardiac rehab department did a great job. Your kindness and compassion were most comforting to my family and me. Ruth Ann Lundgren Omer
