Late field goal sinks SSC gridders

ALMONT -- Standish-Sterling Central nearly escaped Almont with a season-opening victory Friday, Aug. 28, but the visiting Panthers exited the field in a gloomy mood as Almont kicked a 37-yard field goal with 1:05 to play to snatch a 9-7 victory.
Quarterback Mitchell McFarland scored the only touchdown for the Panthers on a 39-yard run midway through the first quarter. Trevor Trombley kicked the extra point for 7-0 lead.
Almont scored its only touchdown midway through the second quarter, but missed the P.A.T. to make it 7-6.
