Lady Eagles smash Akron-Fairgrove in opener, coach expects team to play at high level

TWINING — After 2009-09 saw the Arenac Eastern girls’ basketball team put together a record-breaking season, the team picked up right where it left off when it dominated Akron-Fairgrove 58-10 on Dec. 1 at home.

“We did pretty much what we wanted to do offensively and defensively,” said coach Butch Beckham.

Leading the Eagles on the scoreboard was senior Brianna Dery and sophomore Taylor Jurek, each putting up 13. On the boards, sophomore Ashley Navarre and senior Chelsea Dery each pulled down six rebounds. Senior Danielle Jurek led the team with in assists with eight and Briana Dery had eight steals in the win, which saw the Eagles registering 22 steals as a team.

“I thought we played really good on defense,” Beckham said. He did add, though, that the team may be able to play better around the basket and pull down more missed shots.

Last year, the Eagles were 18-4, a school record, and also won the school’s first-ever district championship in girls’ basketball.

“We had a good year last year and they want to repeat that this year,” Beckham said, adding he doesn’t feel the huge win will make the girls complacent. “They know what it takes to be successful.”

Six of seven of the players on Beckham’s squad are returning players, including all the aforementioned players besides Taylor Jurek, the only new member on the varsity team.

Rounding out the Eagles’ roster are juniors Erin Ecker and Maddie Nelson.
