AUGRES — Arenac Eastern's 44 - 21 victory at AuGres-Sims on Thursday was by no means a thing of beauty. But in the eyes of the Eagles, nothing could have been better.

Eastern held the Wolverines to just three first-half points — a 3-pointer by Ashli Maser in the first quarter — and never let AGS dig out of its hole while leading from start to finish.

"Everyone seemed pretty tight," said AE coach Butch Beckham, whose team led just 4-3 at the quarter. "Neither team could get anything going.

"We got going a bit in the second quarter, made some shots and I think it made them a little tighter as the game went on."

The Eagles pulled out to a 15-3 halftime lead, then put the game on ice with a 17-11 third quarter.

"We just didn't play very well," said Wolverine coach Gordie Ostrander. "Everything we threw at them, they had an answer for."

"They had some different defenses, different full court presses," Beckham said. "But the kids were ready. They responded well.

"Really, I thought we played pretty well other than our shooting. We kept our turnovers down and defensively, I guess you can't complain when you only give up three points (in a half)."

Chelsea Dery led Arenac Eastern (15-3, 11-3 North Star League) with 14 points and 12 rebounds; with Maddie Nelson adding 10 and Briana Dery nine while Danielle Jurek had five assists.

Tasha Trombley had six points and five rebounds for the Wolverines (12-8, 8-6).

AGS doesn't play again until its fourth meeting of the season with Eastern in the opening round of the district tournament at AE on Monday, March 2. The Eagles host Akron-Fairgrove on Monday and travel to Alcona on Thursday.
