BAY CITY — The Standish-Sterling Central Panthers suffered a loss to the John Glenn Bobcats in the opening game of conference play.

John Glenn defeated SSC 39-20 on Friday, Sept. 10. Panthers head coach Paul Walderzak said the team played hard, but mistakes kept the game out of reach.

“We played hard, and I am very proud of our effort,” he said. “We made a handful of mistakes that allowed (John Glenn) to make big plays.”

Walderzak said blown pass coverage and containment issues plagued the Panthers.

We had too many breakdowns on assignments that allowed for some big plays,” he said. “We’ll get back at it this week and work on the things that are lacking right now.”

John Glenn got on top scoring first, but SSC answered quickly when Garrett Pierce scored late in the first quarter.

At the end of the first half, the Bobcats had a 19-6 lead.

Walderzak said the speed of John Glenn was an issue.

“We knew coming into the game that they had speed,” he said. “Their effort can’t be overlooked.”

Walderzak said SSC was able to take away the Bobcat’s inside run game.

“You go into the game and you try to take away what they are good at,” he said. “(John Glenn) traditionally has a good inside run game.”

The Panthers were able to score a couple of touchdowns late, but it was not enough to catch the Bobcats.

Leading SSC players were Pierce who had 14 carries for 54 yards and one catch for 19 yards. Quarterback Ryan Whitman was 5 of 13 passing for 124 yards. He also had seven carries for 10 yards.

Cole Walderzak led the way receiving with three catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Zack Neid anchored the defense, accounting for 20 tackles. Ryan Veitengruber and Shawn Sisson both wrapped up 13 tackles, while Tanner Mitrzyk had seven tackles and an interception.

The Panthers will host the Pinconning Spartans on Sept. 17. Both teams are 0-1 in Northeast Michigan conference play after the Spartans were defeated by Ogemaw Heights Friday.
