Janz sentenced to 9 months in jail

STANDISH — One of the two men facing charges from a December robbery was sentenced to nine months in jail and five years of probation.

Dale Janz Jr.,20, was sentenced for attempted larceny of a person by Arenac County Circuit Court Judge Ronald Bergeron Wednesday, May 4.

On March 28, Janz pleaded guilty to attempted larceny of a person, after being charged with larceny of a person.

Janz was ordered to pay $72 in restitution to Roberta Carcio, 67, of Twining, the victim in the robbery, and $1,598 in other fines and penalties.

Janz, along with Joshua Gibson, 20, both of Standish, were arrested in connection with the stolen purse from Carcio inside of Glen’s Market in Standish on Dec. 29.

“It’s not routine for me to see cases like this in the past,” Bergeron said. “But it’s not out of the ordinary for younger people to take things from older people who may not be able to defend themselves.”

According to a police report from the Arenac County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a purse snatching at Glen’s Market at 533 S. Main St. The report goes on to say that a full-size white van driven by Gibson was followed by awitness who was on the phone with central dispatch.

The witness then reported that the van was stuck in a ditch on Pine River Road, as Gibson and Janz Jr. reportedly fled on foot down Washington Street.

According to a statement by Carcio, she was shopping in her motorized scooter and was being followed around the store by a thin bald man in a black hooded sweatshirt. She added that as she approached the front of the store, the man stole her purse.

Gibson’s trial date is set for Wednesday, May 18. Gibson has pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle on a suspended license.
