Ice cream social honors survivors
STANDISH — An Arenac County Relay For Life ice cream social at the Standish Historical Depot June 22 will honor cancer survivors, their caretakers and family members.
RFL Committee member Denise Dunn said the event is an additional celebration of cancer survivors on top of the annual Relay For Life.
“It truly is for survivors, caregivers, their families,” she said. “We use it to celebrate our survivors with a special event outside of Relay.”
The ice cream social runs 2-4 p.m. rain or shine, Dunn said. Community members or passers-by are welcome to drop in and enjoy a free sundae, according to Dunn. Survivors, teams and individuals can register for the July 12-13 Relay For Life during the ice cream social, she said.
“We have the T-shirts for our survivors, so they can come and register and pick up their T-shirts,” she said. “They can also wait and do that at Relay July 12, but this is an opportunity for them to do that ahead of time.”
Donations will be accepted during the ice cream social, and luminaria bags will be sold as well, Dunn said.
Survivors and guests will be served by Relay volunteers, and there will be a buffet of ice cream toppings, Dunn said.
“It’s all put on by the Relay For Life volunteers — the teams themselves — so it’s team captains, team members,” she said. “We all provide a wonderful selection of toppings.”
There will be a couple of tents erected to protect guests from the sun or rain, Dunn said. If necessary, people can eat on the bandstand under the roof or inside the depot, she added.
“That’s one thing about relayers — we will always have a party no matter the weather,” she said.
This is the second year the social will be held at the depot. Previously it was held at Standish-Sterling Central High School. Dunn said moving the event to the depot increased visibility and led to more people dropping in. Close to 80 people attended last year’s ice cream social, Dunn said.
