Hospital hosting annual community Thanksgiving meal
STANDISH — St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish Hospital is opening its doors to the community for a free Thanksgiving meal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 28.
SMMSH Community Relations Manager Holly Shillair said the event provides a meal for anyone who might not be able to have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner elsewise.
“It’s another way to give back to the community, and also to support those who are in need, who may be celebrating the Thanksgivi-ng holiday alone, or just cannot afford, financially, the Thanksgiving meal,” she said.
Shillair said the dinner had been held for several years, and seems to have grown over the last few years.
“Last year we had about 100 people,” she said. “It seems like every year we’ve seen it grow and have more people come in to take advantage of the free meal.”
Those who have stopped in for the meal are always grateful, Shillair said.
“Everyone is very appreciative and very thankful to have an organization that is providing a free meal on Thanksgiving,” she said.
Although the meal is being prepared in the hospital cafeteria, Shillair said the meal will resemble a common homemade Thanksgiving dinner.
“It is the traditional Thanksgiving meal,” she said. “We have turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, relish trays, rolls and pumpkin pie.”
Shillair said preregistration for the meal is preferred but not required.
