Gulvas looks to repeat at state meet
STANDISH-STERLING — Standish-Sterling's Ashlyn Gulvas has her work cut out for her if she's going to repeat her double state title of a year ago, but the SSC senior survived Saturday's regional competition to advance to the Division 3 state finals in two weeks.
In team competition, Valley Lutheran won the regional title, with SSC taking fourth, Tawas Area eighth, with Pinconning 16th and Oscoda 18th.
Gulvas, not at full strength, won the regional discus title with a throw of 128-0 and took third with a state-qualifying throw of 35-5. Gulvas ran with the second-place state-qualifying 4x400 relay team of Chelsea Szostak, Jennifer Lentz and Katie Ouillette (4:20.52).
Szostak also earned a state finals berth by winning the 300 hurdles (49.82).
Other regional medallists for SSC included Ouillette in the long jump (4th, 15-2.75) and 400 (4th, 1:04.57); Szostak in the 100 (13.40); Lentz in the 100 hurdles (5th, 18.44) and 300 hurdles (53.58); Maddison Kusey, Kelsey Daniel, Jessica Cousins and Sarah Cousins in the 4x100 relay (5th, 54.48); Szostak, Lentz, Jessica Cousins and Ouillette in the 4x200 (5th, 1:52.60); and Jessica Cousins in the 200 (8th, 30.54).
Earning medals for Pinconning were Sadie McGillen in the pole vault (3rd, 8-0); Shannon MacDougall, Emily Podgorniak, Sami Szeszulski and Jessica Vidalez in the 4x800 (8th, 11:14.07); and Vidalez in the 3200 (3rd, 12:54.54).
