Governor not attending Friday's press conference

Posted

Megan Brown, Deputy Press Secretary to Governor Jennifer Granholm told the Independent Wednesday that the Governor will not be attending the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility closure press conference on Friday.

"She is not attending the Standish event," Brown said. "She had previously scheduled events with Vice President Joe Biden for economic recovery."

Brown added the event with Biden is in Kalamazoo on Friday.

The press conference regarding the prison closing is at the Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church in Standish on Friday, at 11 a.m.

The Independent is awaiting an announcement on whether or not a representative from the Governor's office will attend.

It's nice to see our "hard working" elected Governor has time to make an appearance to tout an economic recovery package she had nothing to do with, yet can't look constituents in the face when they want to ask her questions about some bad news. Our state government, and not only her, but our state senators and representatives, needs to spend more time fighting for the interests of the districts they represent. The Independent received a letter from Joel Sheltrown, who represents Ogemaw, Missaukee and Iosco counties regarding the closing, but has yet to receive a statement from our own district's rep. No one fought for the prison in Lansing and no one is fighting for it now in Lansing. And to think I was tired of the 2008 election. 2010 can't get here soon enough.

It's no surprise that she's not attending. Why would she place herself in a hostile environment like that if there is no chance of reversing her decision? It would be stupid. Instead she'll send one of her groupies up and they'll take the heat for her decision.

Yeah, but as far as excuses go, having to go meet the vice president is a pretty good one. I mean, if the vice president visits the state, it'd be nice for the governor to turn up even if it is in her political self-interest.

what a great way for our governor to show our vice president what is really happening to our state not only is the auto industry going down the drain our state goverment is also. she should be working for us the people not her own personal intrest. good thing this is her last term now she needs to secure a new job in our failing goverment.

PRESIDENT OBAMA please give Granholm a federal government job and get her out of Michigan.

Do those of you who voted for her in the last election still feel you made the right decision?

I absolutely feel fine with my vote for her. All of this blame cannot fall onto her. NO governor in recent history took any steps to diversify the states economy, and DeVos laid out no plans that would benefit our state now. But, I guess If he could have instituted the same pyramid scheme-esque policies like his companies (Amway) are ran with we would all be in a better position now. Well, at least those at the top would be.

A portion of the blame falls on every citizen in the state of Michigan. Large metropolitan areas never recovered from the "White flight" in the 70s and 80s, and Michigan's economy is only as strong as those of our largest cities. Granholm did not force anyone to accept subprime mortgages that could only be repaid by the thinnest margins on the best of days, and Granholm did not make banks hand out easy credit to every Tom, Dick, and Sally on the block.

Deregulation got us into this mess, and now we might actually have to sacrifice to dig ourselves out of it.
