Fairview beats AE boys’ in battle of the Eagles

TWINING — Arenac Eastern’s boys’ basketball team had the lead and the momentum for most of the first half against Fairview on Tuesday.

But a couple of quick turnovers to end the first half and three straight Fairview 3-pointers to start the second half turned the tide and propelled Fairview's Eagles to a 65-46 North Star League win.

"We played tough in the first half," said AE coach Bob Morgan. "We were down four (30-26) at halftime, but we really should have been up by four if not for some turnovers in the last minute of the half."

Eastern had led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter. Fairview's burst to start the third period launched a 21-8 run and built a 51-34 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

"The kids were fired up at half," Morgan said. "Then we came out as flat as can be in the second half. Fairview hit three 3's in a row and we just lost any momentum we had.

"I was happy to see the kids play closer to their potential for 14 or 15 minutes, but I sure wish they could put a couple good halves together."

AE (1-10, 0-7 NSL) made just 4-of-16 free throws and shot under 30 percent from the floor.

Graham Morgan and Sean Norton each scored 11 points, with Morgan pulling down 15 rebounds.

Jubal Handrich and Garrett Willobee, each with 16 points, led Fairview (9-1, 7-1) in scoring.
