STANDISH –– Sounds of the season will fill the concert hall at Standish-Sterling Central High School as the East Shore Wind Symphony performs their holiday concert, “Welcome Yule: A Collection of Holiday Favorites” on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m.

Doug Burtch, wind symphony director, said the symphony musicians look forward to this performance every year.

In addition to many traditional Christmas Carols and holiday classics such as “Sleigh Ride,” the wind symphony will give a rare performance of the 1944 Alfred Reed composition “Russian Christmas Music.”

“This composition was written in an effort to help improve Soviet-American relations at the time,” Burtch said. “(It) is an almost overwhelming musical portrait of Russia during this festive time of year.”

Burtch said the Perfect Fifth brass quintet of Mt. Pleasant will be joining the symphony onstage, as along with A Very Tuba Christmas tuba/euphonium ensemble and the East Shore Wind Symphony flute quartet.

“Santa Claus will make a special guest appearance during the performance,” Burtch added. “We encourage audience members to bring their kids to visit with the jolly elf during a reception following the performance.”

Burtch added that on Sunday, Dec. 11 the Arenac Choraleers will be taking over the SSC Performing Arts Center for their second holiday concert of the season.

Tickets for these concerts are available at the door for $5. The East Shore Wind Symphony will also have their CDs available for a $20 donation. For more information contact the Northeast Arts Council at 989-846-4577.
