East Shore Wind Symphony concert to salute American veterans

STANDISH — In its second-ever concert, the Standish-based East Shore Wind Symphony is slated to perform several patriotic songs in tribute to those people who have served our country.

The group is scheduled to perform “An American Celebration: Salute to America’s Finest,” beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7 at the Standish-Sterling High School auditorium. Doug Burtch, the band’s artistic director, said members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion are expected to be on hand for the concert.

A flier for the event states that the band is expected to perform traditional Sousa marches, service songs, Shaker folk songs, Southern spirituals, and original musical works.

Burtch said the group performed its first-ever concert in April, also at the high school auditorium. He said the attendance for the concert was close to 400 people.

According to Burtch, East Shore Wind Symphony is comprised of approximately 50 people. He said the members include current and former band directors, as well as students who are studying music in college.

“So many communities have a community band,” he said. “We wanted to have something a little more professional. A bunch of my friends asked me to try it.”

Burtch also said the members typically schedule four rehearsals, which take place at the high school, prior to a show. He added the group has one more concert scheduled for this season, a holiday concert that is on tap for Sunday, Dec. 19.

Tickets for the Nov. 7 show are $4 for adults and $3 for students, while children age five and younger will be admitted free of charge.
