EDITORIAL: Don’t forget the local people in need

It’s been amazing over the past few weeks how Americans have banded together to raise money after the devastating earthquakes that occurred in Haiti. People all over our great country teamed up to send millions of dollars to help the needy following this disaster.

But remember when you write that check out to the children of Haiti, there are also plenty of needy people right here in our own communities.

We’re not saying you shouldn’t donate to causes such as helping Haitians after such a terrible disaster. But when you make that donation, consider sending a matching donation to a local charity.

For example, right now is a great time to donate to local food banks. Leading up to the holidays, people are always very generous, and many donate to food pantries. However, once the holidays are over, sometimes those pantries are forgotten. The need for food hasn’t changed, but the donations coming in certainly have.

Not to mention, a lot of food is given out by food pantries during the holidays, which means that supplies this time of the year are often dwindling. The need for donations never goes away, but this time of the year could be a time when they are the most needed.

And it’s not just the food pantries that could use your help. There are many great charities and organizations in our communities that do great things for area residents in need — and they could all use our help this time of the year.

It’s great to be giving and to help out, and there is nothing wrong with donating to causes in other countries, but when you do, don’t forget about your friends and neighbors right here in your own county who need help as well.

Now this is what I like to see Americans helping AMERICANS! Not people who would not lift a finger for us.
