STANDISH — Richardson Chevrolet Buick Incorporated and Thelen Mercury Ford of Standish have long been selling automobiles in the Standish area and with the introduction of the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Program, better known as Cash for Clunkers — which provides $1 billion in funding to give eligible automobile owners a voucher worth $3,500 and $4,500 to trade in “gas guzzlers” made after 1985 that get less than 18 miles per gallon, for a new 2008-2010 vehicle — both say public interest is off the charts.

According to Dave Railling, sales manager at Richardson, and Dan Krebs, manager of Thelen, the dealerships have entertained numerous phone calls and visits from customers in regards to the program.

“We (Richardson) are getting six to eight people a day [stopping by],” Railling said. “Plus we’re getting phone calls all day, too.”

“There’s been a lot of interest and it’s increasing everyday,” Krebs said. “We’re anxious to get selling.”

Both dealers say they have sure sales to customers who are eligible under the program but can’t finalize deals just yet.

“The rules aren’t finalized until the 24th [of July],” Krebs said. He added there are guidelines available virtually everywhere, however, they could change by July 24.

“[But] we do have some sure sales,” he added.

“We haven’t sold any cars under the program,” Railling said. “We’re holding some for people… we’re just waiting for the program to go into effect.”

They say the program will certainly help the automotive industry as well as each respective dealership.

“We’re pretty excited,” Railling said. “The auto industry is hoping to sell a couple hundred thousand cars… we’re looking to sell about 10 - 20 more each month.”

“It’ll help for sure,” Krebs said. “It’ll get old cars off the road and get some new gas-friendly cars going.”
