DAR celebrates constitution week

Posted

The River Aux Sables Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), met on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Third Street Deli in Pinconning for the beginning of another year of service. Following the meeting, members and guests reassembled at the Standish Historical Depot and Welcome Center for a short tour led by Brenda Matt.

Membership in the DAR honors and preserves the legacy of a Patriot ancestor. Over two hundred years ago, American Patriots fought and sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. Members of DAR, through participation in the Society’s various programs and activities, continue this legacy by actively supporting historic preservation, promotion of education and patriotic endeavors.

One of the first events on the DAR calendar is Constitution Week, celebrated from Sept. 17–23. This year celebrates the 221st anniversary of our Constitution. Constitution Week is an opportunity for chapters to get involved with local schools, especially since the U.S. Department of Education directed all education institutions that receive federal dollars to offer students instruction on the U.S. Constitution each Sept. 17.

River Aux Sables Chapter members prepared packets of educational information regarding the U.S. Constitution for all fifth grade students in the area where most chapter members live. Teachers will distribute the materials throughout the week in Alcona, Arenac, Iosco and Ogemaw County schools.

DAR encourages all Americans to read and consider what each can do to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies – foreign and domestic.
