County’s August unemployment rate lowest of year
ARENAC COUNTY — When it comes to finding work in Arenac County, there was a sliver of hope offered from the Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth (DELEG) on Thursday, as statistics showed Arenac County’s unemployment rate fell 1.2-percent to 15.7-percent.
The August unemployment rate is the lowest this year for the county, which suffered a staggering rate of 19.3-percent in March, the highest rate this year.
While the unemployment rate for the county made its most dramatic drop of the year (it had never swayed more than .7-percent in either direction the entirety of 2009 prior to August), the labor force and total number of people employed also declined.
According to the DELEG stats, the county’s labor force sank to 8,073 people, down from 8,208 in July (the highest labor force of the year) and the number of employed persons was 6,808, which was 13 fewer than in July.
Arenac County’s unemployment rate was better than 20 other counties in Michigan.
