ARENAC COUNTY — The official Arenac County fireworks show is scheduled to light up the sky in Au Gres July 5 at dusk, but there are several other events planned for the same day before the fireworks begin.

The Forest Lake Property Owners Association is hosting an ice cream social in the Forest Lake clubhouse from noon to 4 p.m., or until the ice cream is all scooped out, July 5. Linda Elkins, with the property owners association, said ice cream is typically around $1 per bowl.

People who do not live on Forest Lake typically stop by to enjoy the sweet treat, Elkins said.

“We have a lot of local people that come when they know that we’re having it,” she said.

The Forest Lake clubhouse is located at 6180 Bobcat Trail in Alger.

Riverbend Campground and Canoe Rental is hosting Nashville musician Ernie Halter in its pavilion July 5 starting at 8 p.m., according to Riverbend owner Katie Mason.

“He’s played with Lady Antebellum, Katy Perry, Jason Mraz,” she said.

Mason said the concert is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. and to wrap around 10 p.m. Tickets are $9 for adults, and children 8 years old and younger get in for free, she said. Seasonal campers often put on a fireworks show during the weekend as well, and community members are welcome to attend, she said.

“They kind of just go to the store, or whatever, and buy some stuff and light it off,” she said.

Riverbend is located at 1165 North Main St. in Omer.

In the Au Gres area, prior to the fireworks show, the Au Gres Yacht Club is hosting a chicken barbecue. Yacht club member Mary DuRussel said the dinner includes chicken, corn, baked beans, cole slaw, a roll and dessert. She said tickets to the dinner need to be purchased in advance and are being sold June 21-29.

DuRussel said tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger.

Tickets are available at the Yacht Club Marine Store, which is located at 3135 Midshipman Dr. in Au Gres, or at the club itself, according to DuRussel.

“The club’s open Friday and Saturday evenings if they want to come purchase tickets there,” she said.

Dinner patrons can stick around to watch the Arenac County fireworks afterwards, as the yacht club offers a great view of the show, DuRussel said. The yacht club’s address is 3232 E. Midshipman Dr.

For the general public looking to attend this year’s fireworks in Au Gres, parking is at the mouth of the Au Gres River, which is at the end of Main Street in Au Gres.
