City of Standish hires Burtch, discusses budget

STANDISH — Peggy Burtch was hired for the combined position of clerk and treasurer for the city of Standish at its regular council meeting March 18.

Council members interviewed eight candidates Feb. 22 and 23 and brought three back for second interviews, City Manager Mike Moran said.

The council also discussed putting in sidewalks along both the east and west sides of US-23 south of Cedar Street. They gave Moran permission to solicit bids for the construction.

“The sidewalks would help the businesses,” Moran said.

The construction on the east side of the road could go as far south as Burger King. There are also curb cuts already in place on the east side of the road as far as Glen’s Market, which will save on the cost of construction, Moran said.

City council also discussed the requests it would make to the Saginaw-Chippewa Indian Tribe for grant money from 2-percent class-3 gaming revenue.

One grant asks for $30,000 to repair the roofs of the Department of Public Works and the fire barn. A second grant requests $3,695 for the Mary Johnston Memorial Library to upgrade to energy efficient lights both inside and outside of the building. A third grant would give $3,932 to the police department for equipment upgrades, and the last grant would be for $200,000 in general allocation.

Before the regular council meeting, the group met for an initial review of the 2010-2011 budget.

The city is going to have a $2 million loss in real property from 2009 to 2010 — which includes real estate and other types of immovable property — and no change in personal property.

The council members also included the wages of the laid off DPW worker in the tentative budget so they can determine if that person could be rehired.

The next budget meeting will be March 25 at 6 p.m.
