STANDISH — The Standish Knights of Columbus hall will host a chicken dinner and silent auction Oct. 25 to raise funds for the sheriff’s department’s canine unit.

Event organizer Jody Wilk said the canine unit is funded entirely through donations. As a result, for the past three years the dinner and auction have been held to help finance it.

“It’s an opportunity to give back to the community,” Wilk said. “We were able to get a grant when we first started for the part of the car where Sonic (the canine officer) stays, but after that it’s been all donations, and no tax dollars.”

Wilk said the canine unit requires funds for training, equipment, and dog food for Sonic. Without the money, the department is unable to afford food and would have to cut the canine unit, Wilk said.

Wilk said the dinner includes a raffle for three different items: A Power Wheel Dodge Charger for kids, a 42 inch television, and a countertop convection oven. Wilk said the silent auction is “bigger and better” than previous years, including donated items like an iPod Shuffle, gift certificates to local businesses, artwork, quilts, toys, and gift baskets.

“In previous years we’ve raised about $4,000 each dinner,” Wilk said. “There will be doggie bags for take-outs.”

The dinner itself will feature chicken, mashed potatoes, pasta salad, dressing, and desserts, all courtesy of Tracie Mosciski and Sally Mrozinski. Wilk said a bake sale is also planned, and people can pay what they want for the goods sold there.

Additionally, Wilk said Sonic is scheduled to be there as well, so people can meet the four-legged deputy.

“It always ends up being a good time,” Wilk said. “The food is good, and the auction items can give people the opportunity to get their Christmas shopping done early.”

Dinner runs from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., while the bake sale will continue into the evening. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $7 adult and $3 children ages 6 to 12 by calling 989-329-3168 or by emailing acctfriends@yahoo.com. Tickets at the door are $8 adults and $4 children. Kids younger than 5 get in free.
