Business burnt in Skidway for second week in a row

SKIDWAY LAKE — For the second week in a row, firefighters were busy in Skidway Lake, as they were called in to extinguish some trailer sections behind Eymer Supply Company early Thursday morning.

However, while the fire that occurred at Honeydooz on Aug. 19 has no suspicion of foul play, Mills Township Fire Chief Brian Gilbert said the Aug. 28 fire at Eymer’s is “suspicious.”

“It was most definitely arson,” Gilbert said. “There were no utilities to the trailers.”

He said there was nothing there that could have caused the fire.

According to Gilbert, the fire started around 1:30 a.m., Aug. 28. He said it was a big fire.

“When I got there, the flames were pushing 30 feet into the air,” he said. “It was a hot fire.”

Moffit Township and Prescott fire departments assisted in the blaze. Gilbert said the Ogemaw Fire Department was alerted, but he called them off when the fire was under control.

Fire crews worked until around 5 a.m. to extinguish the fire.

Bill Eymer, owner of the supply company, said this was the second time his business has been a victim of arson.

“This is the second time the arsons got me,” Eymer said. “Seventeen years ago they burned a 220-foot building.”

Eymer said he heard the explosions from his home, about a half-mile away.

“I heard a boom, then a hesitation for a little bit, then boom again,” he said. “I know it’s arson.”

Eymer Supply Company has been in business for around 145 years. Eymer said the business has been in its current location since 1985.

Gilbert is calling on residents of Mills Township and the Skidway Lake area to assist in the investigation.

“It would be nice if the neighborhood could step up their neighborhood watch program to help us solve this crime,” he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ogemaw County Sheriff’s Office at 989-345-3111.
