STANDISH — The second annual Battle on the Bay snowmobile drag race originally scheduled for Feb. 11-12 has been postponed for two weeks due to unseasonably warm weather.
According to event coordinator Gary Foco, the drag racing event is now scheduled for Feb. 25-26, and will still take place at the Eagle Bay Marina in Standish on Sagatoo Road.
“Weather permitting, it’ll be back on,” Foco said. “Hopefully Mother Nature is good to us.”
Foco said the postponement should not have much effect on the number of racers the event attracts, as it will not conflict with other snowmobile drag racing events taking place in other parts of the region.
If the warm weather continues, Foco said the event would end up being canceled outright, as postponing it further would interfere with races scheduled in Canada.
Nevertheless, he said everything else about the event remains the same: the proceeds will still go to AuGres area athletics through the organizing Wolverine Pride Association, and Foco hopes the event will be a boon to area businesses by bringing in out-of-town customers.
Last year’s Battle on the Bay brought in approximately 10,000 visitors, Standish Chamber of Commerce President Andrew Radatz told the Independent in January.
The event is sponsored by the Standish Chamber of Commerce, Forward Corporation, LaLonde Trucking & Excavating, Soaring Eagle Resort, the Saganing Eagles Landing Casino, and the Saginaw-Chippewa Tribal Council. The Michigan Snowmobile Drag Racing Association is helping organize the event as well.
