AuGRES — Sallie Hinds, of AuGres, enjoys writing poems about nature and people must enjoy reading her work, as Morris Publishing, Nebraska, recently published her sixth book, “Sand Between my Toes.”

“I’ve been writing for a long, long time. I think my first book, I had written in 1979,” Hinds said. “I kept a journal for quite a long time and I would always write things in there.

“I write about nature,” Hinds added. “This is my inspiration – nature and my surroundings and life in general.”

According to Hinds, people have also inspired her to write poems.

“I think Robert Frost was the most (inspirational). He just wrote things I really liked,” she said. “My mom used to read poetry to me. “I can remember her reading to me from the time I was just a little girl.”

Besides being published multiple times, Hinds has also been honored in the poetry community, as she was honored as Michigan’s senior poet laureate in 2004, 2006 and 2007 through poetry contests.

“That’s a high honor. It’s an honor that I think is quite prestigious,” she said.

In “Sand Between my Toes,” Hinds says she covers a wide array of poetry.

“It’s kind of a mixture and it’s poetry a whole family can enjoy,” Hinds said, adding the book is broken up into three different parts. “Part one deals with the seasons changing, part two is kind of miscellaneous and poems about life. … There’s one (poem) about butterflies and different things like that.

“The third part is just for fun. Some of them (poems) are just silly or nonsensical.”

And when Hinds starts to slow down in her writing, she says reading as much poetry as possible helps her stay inspired and driven to write herself.

Hinds also had some words of advice for budding poets who would like to have their work published.

“Keep at it and if you see something that inspires you, write about it,” she said. “I’ve lost a lot more competitions that I’ve won. But when you win or get something published, it’s really a great feeling.

“Don’t get discouraged, just keep at it.”

Other books available by Hinds include “Daydreams and Memories” and “On the Edge of Woods and Water.”
