AuGRES — The AuGres City Council has approved a $1,700 renewal that will keep the city involved with the Pure Michigan campaign.

The renewal will keep information about AuGres and the other counties that US-23 runs through, also known as the Sunrise Coast, part of the tourism campaign.

City Manager Patricia Killingbeck said that being a part of the online campaign last year was a “tremendous asset” for AuGres. She added that each county involved in the promotion has to give a certain percentage per capita to be involved.

“Being part of this campaign has been well worth it for us,” she said.

Killingbeck said since joining the website last year, the city went from having almost zero hits to the number of visitors online reaching the thousands. She added that with the large amount of hits on the site, the city is seeing an increase of information requests in its e-mail.

“We are hoping that being involved in the website will get more people to come to AuGres,” she said. “Hits on a website does not mean that people are going to come here, but it does mean that they are interested.”

The website, located at www.puremichigan.org, gives information about AuGres and other cities involved in the Sunrise Coast campaign. Those other cities include, Alpena, AuSable/Oscoda, Cheboygan, East Tawas/Tawas, Harrisville, and Rogers City.

The site includes an audio clip about the Sunrise Coast and features links to area attractions, like campgrounds, events, and recreation.

“By being involved on this site, (AuGres) will be featured in a number of special ad campaigns for the Sunrise Coast that are created by the people behind Pure Michigan,” she said.

Killingbeck said the best part about being involved with Pure Michigan and the website is that AuGres can show off all that it has to offer.

“This site lets people see the great things that we have here,” she said. “The east-side of the state is, kind of, the hidden side of the state. But we have a lot of resources here and natural beauty.”
