Arenac board authorizes new corrections advisory board

STANDISH — The Arenac County Board of Commissioners, in partnership with Ogemaw County, has agreed to the forming of a new corrections advisory board for Arenac and Ogemaw Counties.

At its Nov. 9 meeting, the board approved a resolution establishing the Arenac Ogemaw Community Corrections Advisory Board. As part of the motion, the Board of Commissioners agreed to appoint a commissioner to serve on the advisory board.

The board’s decision came after it accepted the disbandment of the 34th Circuit Community Corrections Board, effective immediately.

Sgt. Mike Badour, Arenac County Jail sergeant, said the reason for the disbandment of the 34th Circuit board, and the formation of the new board, was that there were some issues between Arenac and Roscommon counties regarding grant applications for different programs in the jails.

“The state requested applications to be modified, and it seemed like it would be best for us to split,” he said. “It’s not uncommon for a community corrections advisory board to separate and rejoin with other adjoining counties.”

Badour also said the newly formed board is requesting funding for a GED program in the jails, with the grant money funding an instructor for the program.

“The advisory board will look at how these programs work,” he said.

Badour said the advisory board oversees several programs in which inmates are placed, such as the community service program or the Sheriff’s Work Crew. He said that upon 16 hours of work in the community, inmates in the program are eligible for sentence reduction.
