Arenac Historical Society debuting new book

ARENAC COUNTY — In conjunction with a pair of Christmas events in Arenac County, the Arenac County Historical Society has published a book detailing the lives of county residents who served the United States in World War I.

The book is titled “Record of Arenac County Soldiers & Sailors in Service in the Great War,” and Joann Gulau, a trustee with the society, said the book is expected to be available for purchase at two different events on Dec. 4-5: the Christmas Walk at the Arenac County Historical Museum in AuGres, and the Christmas Walk at Ye Olde Courthouse in Omer.

Gulau said the Christmas Walk is scheduled to take place Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Dec. 5 from 1-4 p.m. In addition, she said the Open House is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 4-5.

According to Gulau, the Arenac County Clerk’s Office housed the material used in the book, with Arenac County Clerk Ricky Rockwell donating that material to the society about a year ago.

“We copied each page, and that took about three or four months,” she said, adding that Mike Melvin, a member of the historical society, did a lot of that work.

Gulau said that there are 300 soldiers and sailors listed in the book, with a page dedicated to each individual. She said each individual’s record is comprised of where they were born, their parents’ names, their occupation before they were enlisted in the service, and their occupation after they were in the service.

In addition, she said each page lists the individual’s record in the service, where they were first stationed, their rank and position in the military, transfers to different stations, when and how they were discharged, and their record after serving in the military.

Gulau said the book is available through the Arenac County Historical Society’s museum in AuGres, at a cost of $28. She also said the book is available through the society’s website,
